Factoring

The best thing, I think, that I’ve done this year is introducing my students, very early, to questions like this:

What two numbers have a sum of 11 and a product of 24?

What two numbers have a sum of -12 and a product of 36?

I throw them at the end of homeworks, in the daily warm-up, and anywhere else they fit. My students start factoring soon. I hope it pays off.

Pre-teaching! They’ve really taken to this type of thinking. Where else can I do it?
