John Muir Trail

When I haven’t been teaching or planning, I’ve spent much of the last few months planning a long distance backpacking trip on the John Muir Trail this summer. The trail runs over 200 miles through the Sierra Nevada in California. There’s a lot of fun planning that’s gone into it, and one part has made me wish I was a 7th grade teacher teaching proportional reasoning. For instance, caloric density is one big question for the food I pack. The lighter food is, the happier I am carrying it for a week. Compare these:

Which food has the largest number of calories per ounce? How do you know? Which food is most efficient, in terms of cost and space? It’s been a fun project for me, and I want to figure out how to make it a fun project for my students as well.
